Social networking is clearly here to stay. Research suggests that 99 percent of 18 to 24 year olds, or generation Y consumers, have an active profile on at least one social network site. Techtarget defines social networking as the practice of expanding one’s business and/or social contacts by making connections through individuals.

They say that although social networking has gone on almost as long as societies themselves have existed, the unparalleled potential of the Internet to promote such connections is only now being fully recognised and exploited, through Web-based groups established for that purpose.
