Brand Finance, the brand valuation and marketing specialists, recently published their annual list of brand valuations.

Not surprisingly, Apple continues to hang on to their accolade as the world’s most valuable brand, boasting a brand valuation of $87.3 billion (£56.4bn). Samsung leapt from sixth to second place with a value of $58.8 billion (£38bn). Interestingly, it was the niche sports car manufacturer, Ferrari, named the most powerful worldwide brand, achieving the highest brand rating in the Global 500.

This list got me thinking about the fact that a company’s brand, while in many ways intangible, is one of the major assets that can drive growth and profit. The importance of generating customer “love” for your brand cannot be underestimated.

Clash of the titans

While Apple and Samsung battle it out for the peak of the brand valuation mountain, Ferrari is being hailed as the most-powerful, well-loved brand in the world. This leads one to the conclusion that while Ferrari can’t compete with the tech giants on enterprise value, their strength comes from building exceptional products with brilliant design, accompanied by brand affection and loyalty—and these are hugely powerful assets.

In times of economic uncertainty, it’s especially important for brand owners to continue to innovate and deliver quality and value, while maintaining social responsibility, sustainability, and growth.

Look at Apple, for instance; yes, there are sometimes issues with their software updates, resulting in alarms not going off and people missing work, the battery life being poor, etc., but ultimately, the simple user experience and innovation inherent in their products means most of us simply forgive these hiccups. At the end of the day, they make our lives easier and have made advanced technology accessible to the masses.
