Every entrepreneur has been there. You have a great idea, it makes perfect sense to you and your co-founder and then you try and explain it to others and it appears it isn’t quite as straightforward as you thought.

This is exactly what I was faced with circa 2006-2007 with Huddle co-founder Andy McLoughlin. We knew that our cloud collaboration service had intrinsic value and fulfilled a need as we’d both experienced the issue that Huddle seeks to overcome: secure collaboration within and across the firewall. However, they key question we got asked over and over again is: “what is the cloud?”

A new movie starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel reminded me of those days and highlighted two key things to me. Firstly, the cloud now has mainstream awareness and has made it in Hollywood. Secondly, the cloud may be in a Hollywood movie but, years on from when I was trying to explain the concept to prospects, it’s still not understood:

Cameron Diaz: “How do you forget to erase your sex tape?”

Jason Segel: “It kept slipping my mind and then the next thing I knew it went up — it went up to the cloud.”

Diaz: “And you can’t get it down from the cloud?”

Segel: “Nobody understands the cloud. It’s a mystery!”

Now, the content in question above may not be relevant in a business environment, but the dialogue emphasizes that the challenge for suppliers across the globe is still educating people on the cloud.
