Law makers have it easy don’t they? In my mind I see a bunch of people sitting around a large oval table drinking coffee and eating biscuits, all the while discussing the pros and cons of different laws. And then, finally, with a show of hands vote a new Act or Bill into being.

I know in reality this is far more complicated with a lot more wining and dining and lobbying and whatnot, but that image is the one that sticks.

One of these Acts voted into law by UK legislators is the 2008 Climate Change Act, which commits the UK  to reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. A tall order for us British citizens.

I’m sitting here behind my laptop mentally going through my flat thinking how many appliances are switched on right now that don’t need to be. Are all the lights off? Do I really need to do four small loads of washing a week? Can’t I just do two bigger ones?

When it comes to businesses, they need to ask the same questions. How many desks do I have in my office? Do I really need all these people driving into work every day, using the electricity and equipment every day? Can’t I just let them work from home? Do I need all these servers in my icy cold air-conditioned backroom?

The Carbon Trust estimates that office equipment accounts for up to 15% of all electrical energy used in UK offices. Effective management and reduction of this equipment can reduce energy consumption by up to 70%. That does go some way in meeting the requirements of the Climate Change Act.

The challenge of making your office more carbon friendly is not insurmountable. With the right tools, you can do that and save money at the same time. You can transfer your information and documents to a single place: one that is safe, always available and easy to use.

As long as you have an internet connection you don’t need to spend money buying and maintaining all of those expensive servers or have a lot of people sitting behind office desks when they don’t need to be there. You can use collaboration tools such as whiteboards and online meeting places for your regular staff meetings. All of this can be done without having to physically be in an office.

The added bonus is that it helps you to meet the stringent target set by those pesky lawmakers sipping their coffee and munching on their biscuits.
