Huddle has helped Thurrock to streamline project management processes and speed up communications.

Thurrock Council is the local authority for the Thurrock borough in Essex. Part of the commuter belt of London, it has a population of more than 150,000. The Council is focused on developing the local area to ensure that it delivers the best services possible for its local community.

Thurrock Council is currently working on one of its largest town centre regeneration development projects. Purfleet is home to more than 5,000 people and Thurrock Council aims to grow this to 12,000 by enabling a vibrant community hub to be built. New facilities include the development of 3,000 new homes, a health centre and primary school, as well as shopping and leisure facilities. The scheme will also provide approximately 1,560 new jobs in the area. In order to manage the project, Thurrock Council needed a tool that would enable it to share large amounts of information with housing developers bidding for the contract and external organisations collaborating on the project, including Capita Symonds, PwC and Eversheds.

“We simply didn’t have a service in place that was going to be able to support the collaboration required with all parties involved in the job. Previously, we would have used email or even sent a CD Rom for large files. But this is time consuming and no longer practical. With limitations on email sizes, large architectural plans and engineering reports to send through, we needed a secure online platform to share large files with other organisations,” explains Jonathan Harris, Project Manager, Thurrock Council.

“As the council currently relies on external IT support, we needed something the team could run itself or with the vendor’s help rather than a product that would require extensive training. Huddle was recommended to us as it met our needs perfectly. Being cloud-based, it wouldn’t cost a fortune and we could run it ourselves. Prior to deploying Huddle, we would have been reliant on the IT team to manipulate SharePoint for us, but Huddle is user friendly and ideal for people who aren’t overly tech savvy.”

“Security is very important to us. A lot of the material has to be kept private. Huddle has provided us with the platform we needed to structure secure workspaces with the granular security settings we needed.”

Thurrock Council is now running a competition to select a developer for the ‘Purfleet Centre’ project. Consequently, it needed a central online environment to support collaboration with everyone it was working with. Pan government accredited at IL2, Huddle provides a secure platform for Thurrock to share protected data with its partners and external organisations.

“Security is very important to us. Whilst we are keen to collaborate effectively with others, we are very picky about who we share and work on information with. So a lot of the material has to be kept private. Huddle has provided us with the platform we needed to structure secure workspaces with the granular security settings we needed.”

Huddle has helped Thurrock to streamline project management processes and speed up communications by saving all documents related to the project in a central hub.

Following the success of the ‘Purfleet Centre’ project, Thurrock Council hopes to roll out Huddle in other departments. The legal department is interested in Huddle as it provides the ideal content collaboration platform for draft legal agreements. The version control function ensures that everyone – internally and externally - is working on the same document.
